Interview with Larua Guldemaond of BURNING WITCHES: “We’ve prepared a cool show for the fans with a lot of creepy, witchy moments”

In the middle of their European tour, BURNING WITCHES continue to present their latest album, Inquisition, live on stage, bringing their heavy metal to venues all across the continent. This tour will come to an end in Spain, where the band will offer four very special concerts in Barcelona, Murcia, Madrid, and Vitoria, putting the finishing touch on a month on the road. On the occasion of these dates, we spoke with Laura Guldemond, the band’s vocalist, to learn more details about the album, the tour, and what audiences can expect from these highly anticipated shows.

THE METAL FAMILY: First of all, welcome to THE METAL FAMILY. Welcome to the family!

LAURA GULDEMOND – BURNING WITCHES: Thanks!

TMF: Tell us about your latest work, Inquisition: when did you record it, who produced it, and did you leave any tracks off for whatever reason?

BW: We recorded it quite a while ago. We recorded the songs for the singles first and the rest later in the process. V.O. Pulver from Little Creek Studio handled the production. We usually only work on tracks we really like and develop those further, so we don’t finish more songs than necessary.

TMF: The cover really caught my eye; it’s incredible. How did the idea come about? Did you give the designer creative freedom, or did you provide some ideas about what you wanted?

BW: The idea usually follows the album’s theme and the lyrics that are written. During the Inquisition, a lot of witches were burned, so I guess it was time to have a burning witch on the album. We do give some pointers to the artist, like, for example, “we want our faces on there.”

TMF: Over time, what has been the reaction of your fans to the album, and which track or tracks did they like the most?

BW: It has been good! Everyone has their own favourite songs. It’s very diverse what people choose as their favourite.

TMF: What evolution do you notice from the previous album to this latest one?

BW: I think it’s great to have Courtney on board. Her playing style is just great to listen to.

TMF: You are currently on tour throughout Europe. How do you plan the concert in terms of songs from your latest album, classics, and songs that the audience requests you include in the setlist?

BW: It’s a mix of all the albums. You can’t make everybody happy, but I think we’re going to make most fans happy.

TMF: The final leg of the tour takes place in Spain, specifically in February, in Barcelona, Murcia, Madrid, and Vitoria. What can we expect from the concerts, and will there be anything special since it’s the tour finale?

BW: It’s always a surprise what will happen during the last show of the tour. Let’s see! We’ve prepared a cool show for the fans, with a lot of creepy, witchy moments throughout the setlist. Muhaha.

TMF: What do you think of the Spanish audience, a country you have visited on several occasions?

BW: Spain is nice! You have spontaneous, warm-hearted people.

TMF: What would you say to someone reading this interview who becomes curious about buying «Inquisition»? What will they find on it, and why should they buy it?

BW: A good dose of old-school heavy metal with modern production. Cool artwork, too. That’s why you’ll need the vinyl—so the artwork is big.

TMF: Thank you for your time, and we’ll see you in Madrid to say hello and hopefully take some good photos.

BW: You’re welcome. Cheers!
